Antihtpertensive Effect of angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitor(Capril^(¢ç)) in Mild to Moderate Hypertensive Patients

Abstract
We investigated the antihypertensive effect of the low dose of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, Capril¢ç in 22 mild-to-moderate hypertensive patients. Initially, a low dose Capril, i.e., 12.5 mg twice a day was administered, and then the dose was increased to a maximum of 25 mg twice a day depending upon the response. In patients not responding to the dose of Capril¢ç 50 mg / day, hydrochlorthiazide 25 mg daily was added. The end point viz. diastolic blood pressure of 90 mmHg or less was reached in 12 (54.5%) of 22 patients is with a low dose (25-50 mg / day) of Capril¢ç and in another 6 patients after addition of diuretic. The blood pressure was normalized in 81.8% of 22 hypetrensive patients with a low dose Capril¢ç and a diuretic combination. No significant changes were produced in serum electrolytes, lipid, creatinine, FBS, liver function and blood count. There was no increase in protei- nuria. Cough developed in 5 patients out of 22 patients and Capril¢ç administration was discontinued in 2 of those 5 patients. In another one patient, Capril¢ç was withdrawn because - of generalized muscle aching with low back pain and shoulder pain. Gastro-intestinal disco - fort and mild dizziness occurred in one patient. respectively.
We conclude that Capril¢ç is effective as initial therapy in mild to moderate hypertensive patients.
